Depending on your tastes and preferences there's all types of accomodation to suit everybody's budget. I have tried to classify the different options according to cost. Remember, the more expensive the place does not necessarily mean its the best place. If you're after good surf and experience of the culture you're best bet would be to stay at the beach fales around the islands. Otherwise, if you prefer hotels then I've listed the main ones for your reference and links where available (not all accomodation listed in this page have web sites). All listed accomodation are ones that I could gather in a hurry. I hope to travel around Upolu and Savaii and give a full listing of all surf accomodation available, prices, photos and recommendations. Right now I'm in Brisbane, Australia going to grad-school and everything on this website is off the top of my head. |

Hotel Kitano Tusitala - named after the famed Scottish author, Robert Louis Stevenson. Vaisala Hotel (Savaii) - one of Savaii's best. Home of Keith Martin, your surf guide around Savaii. If you go over give him a ring and drop by for a visit. Stevensons at Manase (Savaii) - situated on the noth-east coast of Savaii. Also has a reef infront with some handy right handers. Le Lagoto Beach Fales (Savaii) SURF RESORTS/CAMPS Salani Surf Resort - situated near one of the best spots on the island. BED & BREAKFAST Seaside Inn - probably the best place to go upon first arriving in Apia. Very popular with surfers and backpackers. Has all the essentials and affordable too. For a transfer ask the airport bus driver to drop you off. Oh and don't be intimidated by the fact that he drives at light speed. Seipepa's Travel Home - in the heart of Apia. Samoan Outrigger - popular with the backpackers and ecotourists. Betty Moore's Casual Accomodation - another popular budget spot with the backpacking folk. OTHER What is a Beach Fale ? - is the traditional Samoan hut/shelter. Scattered across many villages and now you can have one all to yourself. Is a very popular form of accomodation with the travelling tourists. Very basic and fun way to stay. Usually administered by the villages themselves. Your best bet to get a taste of the local culture. Food can be provided if required at an extra cost. All have mosquito nets and most have electricity. If you're concerned about privacy, don't worry fales have blinds. Samoan family homes - sometimes surfers get friendly with some of the local families by the breaks and end up staying there. Chances are if you prefer this then it is not hard to find. Samoans open up their doors to anybody. Payment is usually in the form of money gifts (amount is up to you) or helping with some of the expenses or a pre-determined amount with the family head. Either way, reciprocating the family appropriately is expected. |
