GEOGRAPHY : Consists of 2 main islands with 7 seven other smaller islands. Upolu is the main island with commerce centered in the capital city of Apia. The other island, Savaii is actually larger in size but is less populated and is dominated by subsistence and rural life. The whole country is divided into ditricts. Districts are then further divided into villages. LAND AREA : 2934 sq kilometers with an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of 130,000 sq km. Samoa is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and our neighbouring South Pacific islands include American Samoa, Fiji, Tonga, Tokelau, Niue, Cook IS and Tahiti. CLIMATE : Warm all year round with average temperatures of about 29 degrees C. However, it is very humid. The climate is very much the same throughout the year except for the hurricane season that comes round during the summer months (Nov-Mar). During this period it can get very rainy and can rain up to 2-3 weeks at a time. Otherwise we have a very pleasant climate. Samoa can get very hot so get all the necessary sun gear and protection. PEOPLE : People are of the polynesian race but with a distinct Samoan culture. This is based on the extended family structure and also the matai system (leaders of the extended family). POPULATION : 161,298 in the last census 100 billion light years ago, now estimated at about 200,000. Surfers < 10 LANGUAGE : Samoan. English is used in commerce and taught in most schools. GOVERNMENT : Parliamentary system which is also the law making body. Parliament includes the Head of State and 49 member Legislative assembly ( including the Prime Minister and his/her Cabinet). RELIGION : Congregational Christian Church, Roman Catholic, Methodist, Church of Latter Day Saints, and others . . . EDUCATION : Most villages have their own primary school. Each district has its own Junior Secondary School. Main Secondary Schools are located around the Apia area. Tertiary institutions include : The National University of Samoa, University of the South Pacific School of Agriculture, WS Polytechnic, Teachers College and School of Nursing.
